BUR Modified Bitumen / Steel Deck

Installation & Design Considerations

• Protective layer or gravel, slag or white marble chips applied in surface bitumen.
• BUR, torch applied or self adhering modified bitumen membrane must be applied over a cover board.
• A cover board must be adhered or mechanically attached over the polystyrene roof insulation.
• Cover board joints should be taped to prevent hot bitumen from seeping through to the insulation.
• When adhering layers of insulation or the cover board with hot asphalt, the bitumen must cool to 225-250°F before application.
• The need for and placement of vapor retarders should be determined by the building designer.
• Alternate deck materials; all FOAMULAR® roof insulation can be installed directly on concrete, gypsum, wood and Tectum decks.
